06.Your online maturity

1. Now we are all doing something on the net by spending our valuable time. Please ask yourself the following question before logging in again ( on the net!)
2. Are you having an active mail account with regular updation/maintenance? .. if not keep one account as your active mail ID and the rest for specific purposes.
   
3. Do you use a signature in your active mail account? ... if not do it now .. by configuring your mail settings/options .. hereafter you no need to sign again and again ,,, it gives you a Brand (see my signature in the bottom of this mail message !)
4. You must have an advanced email account (IMAP+POP3) for your Business/ pro usages. Try Fastmail.fm and give this mail id only to very close contacts (But tell them to send a CC always to your active mail id , as a Trigger/Alert )
5. If you are using mail clients like Outlook or Eudora, use/learn Message Rules. If you are active in egroups then this is a must and will save a lot of your time.
   
6. When you are joining an active egroup, pls choose your Message Delivery settings to Daily Digest or Special notices ( never choose No emails or Web only ) so that you wont see N number of mails in your inbox.
7. Do you have a Webenvironment? ... no tech jargon... it is nothing but or u having access to various features of the Net ... like ....a personal Home page (at geocities, tripod etc ) .... a chat ID (in yahoo, ICQ, msn etc ) .. a blog.. a membership in a networking portal (Ryze.com etc !) along with an active email ID ?! That is all.
8. If you are bit good at HTML basics then try to have your own web hosting account from hostdream.com (just $ 8.88 per annum! ) ... only after having bought your own domain ( try 888domains.com ) !
9. Kindly update your address books in anyone of the webmail account. When you are on a travel / holyday.. then it will come handy!
10. Don't chat endless hours unless it is needed / where you need a dialogue ! Instead of chatting always ask your friends to mail you .. mails are always having more clarity, contents. logic, order, formatting etc than the chat. PLs note that I never said don't chat! Do it when you need it!
11. Learn how to use advanced searches using google and altavista.
12. Try to have a newsgroup account in Google! ( How many of us are having one ! Still the old world charm is there in the newsgroups! So try now )
    
13. Learn how to use the autoresponder in your webmail account when you are off on few days so that your contacts will know that. ( Never say.. "I am on holiday and will be back in Two days time".. instead use Date and Time! )
14. When you are sending important mail check the spelling and grammar to get a good response. Use online services like dictionary.com for this purpose.
    Never bother when you come across a German or Italian site. Use Babelfish to translate the pages. Though result will bit jerky.. still you can understand the contents. Try reading this spanish site using Babel fish now.
15. Always use alfa numeric passwords around 7 or more characters to increase your online journey bit safer. Also learn how to differentiate a secure site from a non secure one in various browsers.
16. When you are on some tricky sites use a proxy service to hide your info! ( Try megaproxy.com or the proxify.com -the latter one will allow POST command ).. try once and it is very easy.
17. Try online shoping once in trusted portal like amazon or bid at ebay for a simple item like a casset or jewelery. This will help you to prepare for the future!
    At last if you don't have an online money exchange facility ( get a free account from Paypal ) then your web environment is not complete! Try online shopping using Paypal once. Safer and simpler than a credit card transaction!
    

Hope you will do one by one to become a mature online personality! If you have done all these things ( and forwarded this mail to your close friends .. whom you think is very close and intelligent !! LOL! ) in your 'journey into the cyberspace' then you are a matured online adult!
